On the other hand I felt like it was a team effort and we all did our part. One hand I felt like I was being taken advantage of. The more I focused on one side of it the more irritated I got. I've always looked at it like a trade-off. And the artists can benefit by having a shop to work in that has a good reputation and a good walk-in clientele and covers a lot of the basic supplies and so on. The owner will benefit from the Independent contractor part of this because they do not have to pay any kind of health insurance or social security or issue paychecks or anything like that, but they will require mandatory hours like a paid employee. They might go somewhere else and they might tell their friends that they tried to go to this place but it's just not open. and somebody drives down there at 6:30 and nobody is there well then that reflects on the whole shop. From an owner's point of view, they can't be there all day everyday so they have to rely on the crew to keep the operating hours. As an independent contractor you are free to do as you please and show up or don't show up as long as you pay your rent or give the shop it's percentage cut. This is far more common than people realize. Is it normal to have set hours as a tattoo artist, does anyone else have experience with this? This is the only shop I've worked at so I don't have much knowledge to know if this is normal or not. I brought it up to him yesterday and after some discussion, he talked it down to being "a strong recommendation" that we stay until 8. I try to keep myself occupied, but a lot of the time I'm sitting around for hours waiting to close the shop. I book my own appointments and haven't relied on the shop for at least a year and usually my day is over by 6:00. The owner has told us that between the two of us, someone has to stay until 8:00 every day. The owner opens the shop and leaves between 4-5 everyday, whereas the other artist and I show up between 10:30-11:30 everyday. work at a shop that has three artists (one being the owner) and our hours are 10-8:00. Of course I feel like there are some circumstances such as if you're relying on walk-ins to make your money, you'd probably stay in the shop longer than someone who has steady clientele. As an independent contractor, we're legally entitled to make our own hours. I'd imagine a majority of you are independent contractors, same as I am.
